Our film, Bike Tunnels, introduces a concept intended to take bicycle use to the next level in a practical way. It addresses the question: Is there any way to include bicycles in our vision of the future?

After doing the math on cost, energy savings, etc., and researching tunnel construction, we came to the conclusion that putting bike paths on a slight downhill incline is the best idea for making bicycle ridership widespread and a viable alternative to cars, trains and buses. The bikes would then be brought back up to street level on a freight elevator; a tunnel going in the opposite direction would allow riders to return to their starting point, making round-trip bike riding practical for travel to work or errands.

Bicycles are the easy part of this idea: they are plentiful and reliable. Tunnels are more tricky to build. But we are talking about going long, not too deep. Tunnels do provide a steady atmosphere and temperature. With the surface world getting clogged and more ugly by man made objects every day, bike tunnels seem to be the green idea of the day. Simple ideas will win out every time, this is simple and doable. We think that Los Angeles may be the perfect place to build a prototype tunnel. And wouldn't all that exercise for LA residents be a great start to a healthier country?

This is a simple idea, but usually the simple way is the best way. It’s worthy of consideration and thought.
